Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov left for the Federal Republic of Germany on an official visit on November 13.
During the visit, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov will hold talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and with German President Horst Koehler. He will also have a number of meetings with representatives of German official and business circles, the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent reports from Ashgabat quoting the official report.

Turkmen deputy prime minister, foreign minister Rashid Meredov delivered a report at a government meeting yesterday on preparations for Turkmen president's forthcoming visit to Tatarstan Republic scheduled for 28-29 June. The minister also said that a set of documents to be signed on results of Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev's visit to Turkmenistan next month is being agreed with the Russian side, the Turkmen State News Agency (TDH) reports. Rashid Meredov also briefed the head of state on preparations for the Turkmen president's forthcoming visit to Kazakhstan to attend a meeting of CIS and other heads of state as well as a ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the Kazakh capital.

The 9th special meeting of the Turkmenistan-EU joint committee on issues of protecting human rights took place in Ashgabat on June 24. The meeting was held at the Turkmen National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights under the president of Turkmenistan. A delegation of the European Union arrived in Ashgabat to participate in the meeting. The heads and employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights attended the meeting. During the meeting, a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Ms Smildzhan Knez, expressed a high opinion about progressive reforms initiated by Turkmen president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stating that the EU welcomes the steps of Turkmenistan in this direction.

A scheduled meeting of the Council of heads of communication bodies of the Regional Communication Community (RCC) and a meeting of the Coordination Council on Information under the RCC will be held in Ashgabat in September. Heads and representatives of the CIS communication bodies will participate in the forum. Simultaneously, an international exhibition and a scientific conference called "Turkmentel - 2008" will be held in the Turkmen capital on September 24-25. As the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent reports from Ashgabat, Turkmen minister of communication Resulberdi Hojagurbanov reported on preparations for these events at a government meeting on June 23.

Turkmenistan has started a week dedicated to International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking marked globally on June 26. The action has been organized by public organizations forming the nation-wide movement Galkynysh, the state anti-drug agency of Turkmenistan, the ministry of education, the ministry of healthcare and medical industry of Turkmenistan as well as the Ashgabat city administration. A mass climb to the Health Trail attended by thousands of Ashgabat residents kick started the action last Sunday, the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent reports from Ashgabat. One of the central events of the week will be the first international meeting on the issue of combating illicit drug trafficking at sea ports, the state anti-drug agency of Turkmenistan said. The meeting will be attended by representatives of Caspian states and international organizations. The forum will start in Ashgabat on June 24 as part of the Paris Pact Initiative.

A Turkmen delegation has recently visited the capitals of Britain and France to learn the international experience of planning, monitoring and management in the education sphere. The visit was organized with the support of Turkmenistan's education ministry along with two UN agencies, UNICEF and UNESCO, as well as the British Embassy in Turkmenistan and British Council. During workshops held at the Institute of Education of the University of London and at the UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning in Paris, Turkmen officials discussed a wide range of issues, which are of current importance in the context of reforms in the spheres of education and science under way in Turkmenistan, the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent has learned from the UNESCO office in Ashgabat. The sides also explored ways of establishing interstate cooperation in the education sphere.

The government of Turkmenistan is going to get acquainted with products and services of Azerbaijan's business sphere, for which it will arrange for a Turkmen delegation visit to Baku in the near future. This was announced by the Turkmen side at the Turkmen-Azerbaijani business forum on June 17, IA APA reports quoting Azerbaijan's Fund for Exports and Investments Promotion (FEIP). It should be recalled that the two-day forum in Ashgabat was organized by the chambers of commerce of Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. A representative business delegation of Azerbaijan led by FEIP head Emil Mejidov arrived in Ashgabat to attend the forum.

A forum of CIS agricultural producers and an exhibition of farm products, farm equipment and advanced technologies will be held in Ashgabat in 2009. This proposal of Ashgabat was unanimously supported by all CIS member states, CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev said at a meeting with Turkmen vice prime minister, minister of foreign affairs Rashid Meredov in Moscow last week. In this context, the sides discussed issues of practical implementation of this initiative, the State News Agency (TDH) reports. It should be recalled that Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov put forward a proposal to organize an agricultural forum during an informal CIS summit in St Petersburg on June 6. According to the Turkmen president, "the timeliness of such forum is very important in the context of addressing issues of food security."

At a meeting on June 11, the CEO of Itera international group of companies, Igor Makarov, briefed Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on the pace of construction of a number of facilities in Turkmenistan, including a hotel in the Awaza national tourist zone, the company's office in Ashgabat and a stadium in Turkmenabat. Makarov said the development of a project to build an iodine-bromine plant and a carbamide plant in the western region of Turkmenistan was in its final stage, and that these plants would be built by a specified deadline. Itera's CEO also informed the head of state about the pace of preparations for joint activities in the Central Karakum desert, including the development of deposits and the creation of appropriate infrastructure, particularly laying down gas pipelines, the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent reports from Ashgabat.

A foreign language training center was inaugurated at the Institute of Language and Literature named after Makhtumkuli in Ashgabat on June 9. The center was set up by the Supreme Council for Science and Technology under the President of Turkmenistan with the support of the UK Embassy in Ashgabat. The new training center is intended to help postgraduate students improve their English, the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent reports from Ashgabat. There are a library, a resource center, computer classes with Internet access for language learners.

The three day international exhibition and conference "Prospecting and exploration of oil deposits, oil extraction and processing and petrochemistry" has opened in Ashgabat, June 6, in the Exhibition Center "Sergi Koshgi". Over 70 companies from 30 countries of the world, dozens of Turkmen and foreign specialists and experts attend the conference. As the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports, the exposition, which occupies two floors of the palace, displays the achievements of the country's fuel and energy complex. The foreign companies that operate in the Turkmen shelf of the Caspian Sea, carry out supplies and provide maintenance services on assembling and repairing equipments, as well as Turkmen oil and gas sector leading companies like the Turkmenbashi Complex of Oil Refineries, exhibited their products on separate stands.

The Economic Forum was held in Ashgabat on June 2 as part of the International Textile Exhibition dedicated to Turkmenistan's Textile Industry Day. The forum was attended by leading Turkmen and foreign specialists, experts, businessmen and private entrepreneurs from Russia, Belgium, Germany, UK, Switzerland, China, Korea and other countries. Representatives of Rieter, Jum-Shui, Engin Group, KITECH, Hansman companies spoke at the forum which was held at the conference room of the ministry of textile industry, the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent reports from Ashgabat. They shared their plans and vision for developing the productive cooperation with Turkmenistan. Representatives of other companies that are willing to start their business on the Turkmen market and interested in establishing business contacts also attended the forum. An international exhibition dedicated to Day of Textile Industry of Turkmenistan was inaugurated at Sergi Koshgi exhibition center on June 1. The exhibition was organized by the ministry of textile industry of Turkmenistan. The programme of the exhibition features a fashion show by designers of Fashion House of the ministry of textile industry of Turkmenistan, Gulzaman Fashion House, Vyacheslav Zaytsev Fashion House (Russia), Oleksander Gapchuk (Ukraine) and Akhmed Nabeli (Pakistan). The exhibition displays goods produced by leading Turkmen textile plants that are in great demand in Turkmenistan and abroad. These are Turkmenbashi Jeans Complex, Turkmenbashi Textile Complex, Kipchak, Geoktepe and Bayramali textile plants and others. Over 60 foreign companies, big producers and suppliers of textile equipment and chemical production, also demonstrate their new products at the exhibition.

On May 29, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received Romanian foreign minister Lazar Comanescu who arrived in Ashgabat at the head of a high-rank delegation. During the meeting, the sides discussed prospects for cooperation in the textile industry, agriculture, transport, tourism and fuel-energy sector, the Turkmen State News Agency (TDH) said. Particular attention was paid to cooperation in the humanitarian sphere, namely education. The sides confirmed their intention to further develop cooperation between the two countries, including through such efficient mechanism as an intergovernmental commission. "Romania is looking forward to your visit. The very fact that Turkmenistan is the first country that I visit in my capacity as foreign minister speaks for foreign policy priorities of Romania that pays particular attention to development of relations with Turkmenistan," Lazar Comanescu said. The sides held bilateral economic consultations in the Turkmen capital on the same day. Members of the Romanian delegation also took part in consultations.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher have discussed, May 28, the prospects of developing mutually beneficial cooperation and security issues including in the energy sphere. According to the Turkmen State News Agency (TDH), the sides identified a number of other most important areas of interaction including economy, agriculture, education and healthcare. "The Unites States attaches great importance to developing relations with Turkmenistan playing a key role in Central Asia", Richard Boucher said. The US Envoy expressed his country's readiness to "render all possible assistance to the reforms launched by the Turkmen leader, including the constitutional and legal ones, that are set to become irreversible on the way of democratic transformations".

The ceremony of signing the Memorandum of understanding on energy cooperation between Turkmenistan and the European Union took place in the Presidential Palace, May 26, the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports. The imposing EU delegation led by Andris Piebalgs, EU commissioner for energy arrived in the Turkmen capital to sign the document. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France in Turkmenistan Christian Lechervi attended the meeting. The members of the Cabinet of Ministers and high rank officials of Mejlis of Turkmenistan took part in the meeting from the Turkmen side.
