June 19, 2008. N. Nazarbayev stands for Kazakh-Japanese economic partnership enlargement
Kazakhstan is interested in economic cooperation development with Japan, Head of the State Nursultan Nazarbayev said at the meeting with President of Japanese DietÒs House of Councilors Satsuki Eda. Press Secretary of the President Yerlan Baizhanov made it public, giving comments on the results of the meeting. N.Nazarbayev noted that the aim of his visit to Japan is to raise the two countries' economic cooperation on a new level, which includes agriculture as well. ÓPresident thanked the Japanese party for the help rendered in rehabilitation of Semipalatinsk region and the Aral Sea and noted that he supports the Japanese initiative on environment protectionÔ, the Press Secretary said.

May 30, 2008. Kazakhstan Development Bank signed memos of coop in Japan
In the course of a Governmental delegation' visit to Japan on May 19-20 Kazakhstan Development Bank has had a number of meetings with Japan counterparts. The visit was made within the 9th sitting of the Kazakh-Japan Cooperation Committee. Memorandums of mutual understanding with "Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation" and "Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ" have been signed following up the results of the meetings, Kazinform cites the Bank's press service. The above-mentioned documents provide development and expansion of bilateral business cooperation with Japan in following spheres: joint realization of investment projects; structural financing of development projects in Kazakhstan and a number of other countries; syndicated loans on the world markets; international trade financing including organization of contracts of structural trade financing; participation in mutual programs on personnel training; consulting/research activity.

May 20, 2008. Tajik president, Japanese envoy discuss cooperation issues
State and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Japan were discussed yesterday at a meeting of President Emomali Rahmon with Japanese Ambassador to Tajikistan Tsutomu Hiraoka. According to presidential press service, President Rahmon noted that Japan is important and reliable partner of Tajikistan within the Asian continent and highly appraised the results of his visit to this country that was held last December. The president noted that a grant agreement on the project for rehabilitation of the Qurghon Teppa - Dusti road is one of results of that visit, the press service said.

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received a Japanese business delegation led by Co-Chairman of the Turkmen-Japanese Committee for Economic Co-Operation, Vice President of Itochu Corporation Mr. Sumitaka Fudzita. Cordially greeting the guests the Turkmen leader focused with satisfaction on the high level of Turkmen-Japanese partnership successfully maintained in a broad range of the fields including the deliveries of high-powered road-building and earth-moving machinery. Expressing belief that a regular meeting of the bilateral committee for economic co-operation would offer a powerful incentive to intensify effective collaboration Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that this co-operation was regarded as of paramount importance and very promising basing on its profound potential and experience of many years as well as the large-scale reform programmes implemented in Turkmenistan.

April 14, 2008. ADB executive director visiting Uzbekistan.
Executive director of the Asian Development Bank Kyung-Ho Kim is on a visit in Uzbekistan. While in Tashkent, the ADB official held talks in the number of ministries and departments of Uzbekistan. At the negotiations with the vice-chairman of board of the National Bank of Uzbekistan Batyr Nurullayev, the sides considered perspectives of relations between the country and the bank, including implementation of new joint projects. The ADB has invested in various socioeconomic spheres in Uzbekistan since 1995, supporting the reforms in the country. In March 2006, the bank approved the strategy and cooperation program for Uzbekistan for the years 2006-2010.

Trade and industrial exposition of the Republic of Uzbekistan was held in Tokyo in Japan in early March this year as a part of the One Village One Product Programme implemented by the Japanese government. The Manufactured Import and Investment Promotion Organization (MIPRO) of Japan and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Uzbekistan along with the assistance of the Embassy of Uzbekistan to Japan organized the event. December 27, 2007. Japan considers new possibilities for cooperation with Uzbekistan
Recently, Tashkent hosted a second business forum of business circles of Uzbekistan and Japan. The forum was devoted to further development of trade-economic and investment cooperation. On December 20, Minister of economy, trade and industry of Japan Akira Amari met with Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan to Japan Mirsobit Ochilov. The Japanese official highly appreciated results of the forum and noted that his ministry is elaborating an action plan on intensification economic interaction between two countries. In opinion of Mr. Amari, it is necessary to maintain phased dialogue with an aim of conducting of third Uzbek-Japanese business forum to establish new strategically important directions of economic interaction.

December 21, 2007. Japan's Government extends grant assistance to Tajikistan
Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi and Mr. Hiroshi Takashi, Charge d'Affaires, the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe, exchanged notes concerning the General Grant Aid of the Government of Japan for the project for the rehabilitation of the road from Qurghon Teppa, the capital of the Khatlon province, to Dusti, the administrative center of Khatlon's Qumsangir district, and project for enhancement of water supply in Khatlon's Hamadoni district. The Qurghon Teppa-Dusti road is a 59-kilometer section of the important route Dushanbe-Nizhniy Panj-Afghanistan - Pakistan. The Government of Japan allocated ?63 million (equivalent to $ 557, 029) for undertaking the detailed design for rehabilitation of this part of the road, which links to the Dusty-Nizhniy Panj section of 27.4 kilometers, currently rehabilitated under the Grant Assistance of the Government of Japan. The ?49 million (equivalent to $ 433, 244) Japan Grant Assistance is provided to fund the detailed design of the project for enhancement of water supply in Hamadoni aimed to enhance the portable water supply facilities in this District of Khatlon Region, which will have a huge benefit for its population as they will have access to pure and quality portable water.

December 5, 2007. Tajik president met with WWC head in Beppu
Issues related to elaboration and adoption of an international water convention and convocation of a special session of the UN General Assembly on water matters were discussed a meeting of President Emomali Rahmon with Mr. Lo?c Fauchon, President of the World Water Council (WWC), which was held in Beppu, Japan on sideline of the First Asia-pacific Water Summit. The two also considered issues of preparations for international conference on reduction of water-related disaster risks that is expected to be held in Dushanbe next year. According to the Tajik head of state, the time has come when this issue should be discussed at the level of the UN General Assembly. Mr. Fauchon, for his part, named President Rahmon’s proposals important and timely and said that WWC would study those initiatives. He also invited Tajik president to attend the next World Water Forum that will be held in Istanbul in March 2009.

December 4, 2007. Tajik president offers to elaborate international water convention
Addressing the First Asia-Pacific Summit in Beppu, Japan, President Emomali Rahmon has offered to elaborate and adopt an International Water Convention. Tajik president reminded that in 2003, more than 140 countries seconded Tajikistan’s initiative on announcing 2005-2010 a Water for Life Decade. He noted that world reserves of coal, oil and natural gas annually decrease and at present the use of hydropower resources if great significance. He also proposed to set up a Water Partnership of advanced states, which would provide targeted assistance to developing and poor countries.

December 3, 2007—December 4, 2007. The 1st Asia-Pacific Water Summit

The first summit will be organized by the Asia-Pacific Water Forum and the Steering Committee of the 1st Asia-Pacific Water Summit consisting of eminent persons from Japan and other countries in the region. The objective of the Asia-Pacific Water Summit, which will be carried out in Oita Prefecture, Japan is to create opportunity for the leaders of the region to recognize the significance of water issues for achieving the MDGs. The Summit will focus on the three priority themes which were identified in the regional document for the 4th World Water Forum as the first important steps towards progress: Water Financing, Water-related Disaster Management, and Water for Development and Ecosystems. The Summit will also facilitate dialogue between leaders from the region, and partner organizations to tap new sources and to develop innovative financial mechanisms.

President Kurmanbek Bakiyev met with Emperor of Japan Akihito within the framework of the visit to Japan. The head of the state also met with Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.
