Throughout the world, the dismal state of water supply in Central Asia has gained notoriety. The famous image of broken down ships beached far from shores of what remains today of the Aral Sea tragically illustrates this situation. Clearly, the imperative of securing and maintaining quality water supplies has become a critical strategic challenge facing Central Asian countries, and particularly Kazakhstan. In order to address the urgent challenges and necessary solutions for the future of water supply in Central Asia, Kenes Exhibitions has joined with ITECA from Kazakhstan in hosting the Central Asian International Water Technology Exhibition & Conference, the premier event to exchange information about these issues. June 26, 2008. Kazakhstan - Kyrgyzstan cultural cooperation discussed in Bishkek
Kazakhstan - Kyrgyzstan cultural cooperation was discussed in Bishkek on Wednesday, the agency reports referring to the Ministry of Culture and Information of Kyrgyzstan. According to the press service of the Ministry, bilateral meetings of Culture Minister Sultan Rayev with Vice Minister of Culture of Kazakhstan Mynbay Darhan Kamzabek uly took place during the fifth meeting of Culture Ministers of SCO member states. S. Rayev noted that mutual relations in the field of culture and arts between SCO countries have been developing. SCO festival in Bishkek and creative forum of intelligentsia of the neighboring countries were held last year in Almaty. To expand such cooperation, S. Rayev suggested activization of exchange of creative collectives, in particular, theatrical and art, especially from frontier oblasts of the Republics. The arrangement on renewal of publishing of scientific-literary magazine in the Kazakh and Kyrgyz languages Alatau-Alataoo has been reached. Aytmatov's books will be published in Kazakhstan, including his most recent work When Mountains Fall, as well as other Kyrgyz writers in the Kazakh language. The works of classical authors of the Kazakh literature will be published in Kyrgyz.

A business forum "Cooperation: South Kazakhstan - China" organized by the Socio-Entrepreneurial Corporation "Ontustik" JSC is taking place in Shymkent town; Kazinform reports. In April Beijing hosted a business forum "Kazakhstan - China: partnership for success" where the Kazakh delegation including the representatives of "Ontustik" JSC took part. The delegation had a number of business meetings with the representatives of the Chinese business structures interested in investment projects of South Kazakhstan region. The "Cooperation: South Kazakhstan - China" forum is aimed at the development of cooperation with the Chinese entrepreneurs and state structures, attraction of partners for collaboration in the sphere of equipment production and introduction of the advanced technologies to South Kazakhstan oblast.

June 24, 2008. Kazakh-American forum on state-private sector partnership started in Astana
A Kazakh-American forum on the initiative of state-private sector economic partnership has started its work today in Astana. The forum was opened by Vice Minister of Industry and Trade Yedil Mamytbekov. According to Y. Mamytbekov, the USA is KazakhstanÒs one of the largest trade and economic partners. The volume of commodity turnover between the two countries made USD 2 bln in 2007. The USA is the first investor-country of Kazakhstan. These are very good indices and we consider that potential of our trade and economic relations has not been exhausted yet, Vice Minister said. Representative of the US Department for Commerce pointed out that Óthe forum will become something like a catalyst for strengthening commercial and trade ties. Integration of the private sector to world economy depends on state bodies' work, he noted.

VI session of the Kazakh-German working group on trade and economic cooperation is to start its work today in Berlin under the chairmanship of Kazakh Minister of Economy and Budget Planning Bakhyt Sultanov, Kazinform refers to the Economy MinistryÒs press service. The German side will be headed there by Vice Minister for Foreign Trade Karl-Ernst Brauner. June 20, 2008. WB Group President praises prudent policies and reaffirms commitment to support growth in Kazakhstan
World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick on June 18 praised Kazakhstan for its prudent policies in managing the challenges of financial market volatility and commended Government's goal of increasing country's competitiveness through institutional and human development. He also reaffirmed the World Bank's commitment to a long-term partnership with Kazakhstan as he completed the first part of his first official visit to the country. Mr. Zoellick met with President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Prime Minister Karim Massimov, and other government officials to discuss the opportunities for cooperation on promoting economic growth, and social reforms. The meetings addressed the issues of the global liquidity crisis, administrative and public finance reforms in the country, social and human development, as well as regional cooperation and Kazakhstan's role in the Central Asia region and beyond.

June 19, 2008. N. Nazarbayev stands for Kazakh-Japanese economic partnership enlargement
Kazakhstan is interested in economic cooperation development with Japan, Head of the State Nursultan Nazarbayev said at the meeting with President of Japanese DietÒs House of Councilors Satsuki Eda. Press Secretary of the President Yerlan Baizhanov made it public, giving comments on the results of the meeting. N.Nazarbayev noted that the aim of his visit to Japan is to raise the two countries' economic cooperation on a new level, which includes agriculture as well. ÓPresident thanked the Japanese party for the help rendered in rehabilitation of Semipalatinsk region and the Aral Sea and noted that he supports the Japanese initiative on environment protectionÔ, the Press Secretary said.

June 16, 2008. Int'l conference of Central Asian judges is on in Astana
Today Astana hosts an international conference for the judges of Central Asia, devoted to the 10th anniversary since adoption of the Aarhus Convention. "The Supreme Court along with the Environmental Ministry, EU project, OSCE Centre in Astana and UNEP arranged this event. This conference is a continuation of our cooperation. I think its results will contribute to strengthening of ecological safety," the address of chairman of the Kazakh Supreme Court Kairat Mami reads. One of the key elements of the convention is the access to environmental information and public participation in environmental decision making. The Aarhus Convention is one of the two ratified international documents. The second one is the optional protocol to the Convention on liquidation of all forms of discrimination against women, ratified on July 4, 2001. According to these documents people of the country and non-state legal entities have the right to apply for the international authorities on the Aarhus Convention inobservance. Kazakhstan signed the Aarhus Convention back to 1998 and ratified it two years later.

June 11, 2008. Kazakhstan, China negotiate security cooperation
The 4th session of the Security Cooperation Subcommittee has started today in Beijing within the framework of the Kazakh-Chinese Cooperation Committee, Kazakh Embassy in China reports. Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Nurlan Yermekbayev heads the Kazakhstani delegation consisting of diplomats and representatives of the domestic law-enforcement agencies. During two-day session the sides plan to sum up results of the work done since the 3rd session and coordinate the major spheres and directions of security cooperation. In addition, representatives of the Kazakh and Chinese law-enforcement agencies are to discuss problems of cooperation in counteraction to criminal activity.

Kazakh Ambassador to Belgium Konstantin Zhigalov had yesterday a meeting with deputies of Belgian legislative body and members of "Kazakhstan-Belgium" intergovernmental friendship group. The meeting contributed to supporting contacts with reps of the Belgian establishment and allowed to discuss issues of the oncoming participation of Belgian deputies in the work of the XVII session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Astana. The deputies got familiarized with Kazakhstan's new achievements in socio-economic and political development. On the threshold of celebration of Astana's 10th anniversary the guests were demonstrated a documentary film about Astana prepared by world famous Belgian architectural bureau "BAR". Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev's book "Kazakhstan's way" translated into French and Flemish - Belgium's state languages - aroused great interest among the attendees. The guests also expressed interest in the book "Kazakhstan - European Union: results and horizons of cooperation" published by Kazakh Embassy on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the EU and KZ.

The 4th session of the Security Cooperation Subcommittee of the Kazakh-Chinese Cooperation Committee will take place in Beijing on June 12, Kazakh MFA official spokesperson Yerzhan Ashikbayev told a weekly briefing on Monday. The session is believed to be co-chaired by deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan and assistant to Foreign Minister of China. Security Cooperation Subcommittee is one of the profile subcommittees of the Kazakh-Chinese Cooperation Committee. It is aimed at coordination of mutual cooperation in the sphere of security, including fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism, cooperation between special services, military and law-enforcement bodies.

June 5, 2008. Kazakh AIC, Intel Technologies, Inc signed agrt on coop
The Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Informatization and Communications has signed an Agreement on cooperation in information technologies sphere with Intel Technologies, Inc. During the first visit to Kazakhstan Chairman of Intel Technologies, Inc Kraig Barrett announced start of a number of initiatives in coop with the Kazakh Agency. Mr. Barrett expressed interest in implementation and development of information technologies in Kazakhstan. The head of the company noted positive dynamics of IT-market development in the Central Asia and in Kazakhstan particularly. According to Mr. Barrett, the abovementioned document aims at improvement of Kazakhstan's info-communication infrastructure, including usage of up-to-date technologies in wireless access to Internet at schools and universities. Signing of the agreement between the AIC and Intel will give a fresh impulse to the development and deepening of mutually beneficial cooperation in IT for the good of economic and social development of Kazakhstan's IT sphere. The sides intend to promote realization of joint programs and projects and development of service technologies and market in IT.

June 4, 2008. "Intel" Corporation, Kazakh Government develop educational initiatives
Within his first visit to Kazakhstan Chairman of the Board of Directors of "Intel" Corporation Craig Barrett announced of start of initiatives' realization in cooperation with Kazakhstan's Government. "Intel" and Government of Kazakhstan concluded official agreement on intentions to realize state initiatives in the spheres of education informatization, development of wireless internet technologies and high-performance computing. "Partnership of state and private sectors is able to change life of humanity, especially due to integration of technologies into education", Mr. Barrett stated. "President Nursultan Nazarbayev pointed out an aim to enter the 50 most competitive countries of the world. We share opinion that application of information-communication technologies for stimulation of economic growth and development is of paramount importance on the way toward this goal", he added. According to the agreement, Kazakhstan's teachers will be educated to apply digital technologies in educational process; educational establishments of Kazakhstan will get 300 computers. Several schools in Astana have already received 70 personal mobile computers each.

A subregional seminar on environmental impact assessment for Central Asia and Azerbaijan will take place in Almaty on June 3-5, Kazinform refers to the press service of Regional Ecological Centre of Central Asia. A purpose of the roundtable is to make strategic environmental impact assessment in Central Asian countries and Azerbaijan. The representatives of the environmental protection departments, international and social organizations, mass media of the participating countries will participate in the event. The project is realized by the Regional Ecological Centre of Central Asia in association with Kazakh Environmental Protection Ministry and Bern University (Switzerland).

June 3, 2008. 1st Intl forum on sustainable development opened in Astana
Sustainable development of the Eurasian continent I International forum has gathered ecologists from the CIS states, Europe and Asia, reps of international organizations and NGOs. The forum aims at elaboration of common position on XXI century's topical issues. Delivering a speech, Minister of Environmental Protection Nurlan Iskakov noted that Kazakhstan will host regular ministerial conference on Asian-Pacific region's sustainable development in 2010 and an analogous conference regarding European countries in 2011. According to the Minister, it is planned to initiate linking of European and Asian transition to sustainable development into a unified Eurasian process as well as suggest creation of a UN International Institute on sustainable development with headquarter in Astana. A Eurasian Water Center is being created in Astana at present. "This Center will serve as a large scientific-research organization which will solve problems of water resources ecology, water quality, elaboration and implementation of breakthrough projects on structural-information properties of water and its recreational potential", Mr. Iskakov said. Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Karim Massimov sent a greeting telegram to the attendees of the forum.

May 30, 2008. Kazakhstan Development Bank signed memos of coop in Japan
In the course of a Governmental delegation' visit to Japan on May 19-20 Kazakhstan Development Bank has had a number of meetings with Japan counterparts. The visit was made within the 9th sitting of the Kazakh-Japan Cooperation Committee. Memorandums of mutual understanding with "Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation" and "Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ" have been signed following up the results of the meetings, Kazinform cites the Bank's press service. The above-mentioned documents provide development and expansion of bilateral business cooperation with Japan in following spheres: joint realization of investment projects; structural financing of development projects in Kazakhstan and a number of other countries; syndicated loans on the world markets; international trade financing including organization of contracts of structural trade financing; participation in mutual programs on personnel training; consulting/research activity.

May 28, 2008. Kazakh-Latvian coop in transport develops actively: T. Zhdanova
"Kazakh-Latvian cooperation in transport sphere develops actively", Vice President of Commerce and Industry Chamber of Kazakhstan Tatyana Zhdanova has told at a Kazakh-Latvian Business Forum in Almaty. As the Vice President noted, launch of a specialized Kazakh-Latvian grain terminal in Ventspils seaport in 2005 became one of the largest events in both countries' economic cooperation. "This is our Republic's first investment project in the Baltic States and it demonstrates Kazakhstan's potential not only in Latvia but also on the whole European market", T. Zhdanova noted. There are 44 officially registered joint enterprises in Kazakhstan. 33 Kazakh-Latvian joint ventures are working in Latvia at present.

Kazakhstani government invites Swedish investors to take part in "30 corporative leaders of Kazakhstan" state program. Galimzhan Pirmanov, vice-minister of economy and budget planning, stated it today during the 5th session of Kazakh-Swedish commission on trade-economic cooperation. "Using this event, I call Swedish side to take part in implementation of "30 corporative leaders" program," said Galimzhan Pirmanov. Along with this, he marked, that "the program has open character, and foreign companies equally with Kazakhstani residents can take part in it". "The basic demand to the participants is foundation of "revenue center" in Kazakhstan," said the ministry representative.
